Alan Secord Armstrong, 91, of Clemson, beloved husband and best friend to Barbara Ann Bechtel Armstrong, passed away August 2, 2021.
Born in New Britain, CT, he was the son of the late George McKinnon and Philomene Caya Armstrong. Al served his country proudly in the United States Army during the Korean War. Mr. Armstrong graduated from the University of Kansas in 1966 with a Ph.D in Microbiology/Immunology. While in college he was a member of Delta Chi. He was employed by Abbott Laboratories in Illinois for 28 years, retiring as a Research Fellow in 1993. After retirement, he and Barbara moved to South Carolina, living first in Keowee Key, Salem, Beacon Shores, Seneca and Patrick Square, Clemson in 2012. Al was an active member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Clemson, where he was a teller from 1997 until 2020, served as an usher, served on various committees and enjoyed Sunday School. He loved sailing on Lake Michigan, boating on Lake Keowee, gardening, doing outside projects and puttering. Al loved to say, "Very blessed. Life has been good. If life was any better, I couldn't stand it!"
Mr. Armstrong is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara Armstrong; daughters, Jane Elizabeth Armstrong Jones (Matthew) and Barbara Lynne Armstrong Devine (Dr. James); grandchildren, Alec Jones and Bryan Jones (Megan); stepgrandchildren, Jed Devine (Laura) and Mary Devine Mastroianni (Michael); great grandchildren, Trey Devine and Max Mastroianni; sister, Beverly Barringer; niece, Deborah Barringer Brooks (Dr. Kerry).
Al was predeceased by his parents and a brother, David Armstrong.
A memorial service will be held Monday, November 22, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Clemson.
