Aldrich A. Atkinson
- Clemson, SC

Aldrich A. "Trip" Atkinson, 88, of 213 Mulberry Avenue, passed away on July 24, 2008 at the Cottingham House of OMH Hospice of the Foothills following a prolonged illness. Born in Britton's Neck, SC on October 6, 1919, Trip was the 4th of ten children of the late E.J. and Carriebelle Altman Atkinson.

Following graduation from Britton's Neck High School, Trip attended Spartanburg Junior College until 1940 when his National Guard Unit was activated to the C-Battery 178th Field Artillery. The unit was deployed to the UK, North Africa and Italy, where in 1943, during the campaign to capture Rome, he was injured and awarded the Purple Heart Medal. Following an extensive recuperation at the VA hospital in Atlanta, Trip was a member of the first group of ten veterans who were admitted to Clemson College under the GI bill in 1944.

While at Clemson, Trip, met, courted and married his soul mate, "that little girl" Catherine Annette DuBose who was a nurse in training at Oconee Hospital. They were inseparable and absolutely devoted to each other until her untimely passing in 1996.

Trip earned a degree in Agricultural Engineering from Clemson College and was employed as assistant dining manager for the college for 20 years. He then became manager of the Oconee County school lunch program. Following retirement, he regularly worked as a substitute teacher.

A most active community supporter, Trip delivered Meals on Wheels in the Clemson/Central area and was on the Oconee County Red Cross Disaster Relief Team. He was a member of the Pendleton United Methodist Church, Seneca Bobcat Boosters, Blue Ridge Shrine Club, Clemson Masonic Lodge, Seneca VFW, and served as Chaplain emeritus of American Legion Post 120. His greatest passion after his family was Clemson sports. When he was no longer able to attend games, he cheered most loudly from the home front.

A beloved brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Trip was preceded in death by brothers, Francis and E. J. and sisters, Miriam Boulware and Ellen Friday. He is survived by five siblings: Carriebelle Sells of Knoxville, TN, John Quincy Atkinson of Marion, Gladys Vinzani of Florence, Pauline Edwards of Marion, and W.D. Atkinson of Mullins; five children, Lawrence "Larry" Atkinson, Rebecca E. "Becky" Atkinson and Catherine B. Atkinson, all of Clemson, A.A. "Richey" Atkinson, Jr. and his wife Sandra of Panama City, FL, and Joseph J. Atkinson and his wife Sandy of Seneca; six grandchildren, Rob Atkinson, Brandy Johnson, Holly Atkinson Knutson, Trey Atkinson, Brandon Kay, Brianna Kay; three great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and countless friends.

A graveside service will be 2 PM Sunday at Pendleton United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be Saturday night from 6 PM until 8 PM at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the OMH Hospice of the Foothills; 390 Keowee School Road; Seneca, SC 29672.

The family is at the home of his son, Larry Atkinson, 110 Mountain Laurel Drive; Clemson, SC 29631.
