Alex F. Hammond, Clemson
Alexander Francis Hammond, husband of Bess Moses Hammond of Clemson Downs, Clemson, SC, died Tuesday, October 30, 2007 after a long period of declining health.
Born in Lancaster County on September 15, 1917, he had recently celebrated his 90th birthday with all of his immediate family present. The son of the late Alexander and Louise Mobley Hammond, he was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters. Besides his wife of 61 years, he is survived by a daughter and her husband, JacqueLyn and Frank Dennison of Augusta, GA, a son and his wife, Hugh and Cindy Hammond of Charlotte, NC, grandsons Steven Dennison of Augusta GA, Nathan Hammond and Devin Hammond of Charlotte, NC, and a number of close nieces and nephews.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Force European Theater. Following the war, he received graduate and undergraduate degrees from Clemson College, and then taught in the School of Engineering until his retirement as Associate Professor Emeritus.
For many years he was quite active in church and community affairs. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Clemson where he served as deacon, Sunday School superintendent and several other leadership positions. As president, he brought life to the Men's Brotherhood, building camaraderie and tripling membership.
He believed in the importance of providing children and youth with recreation and opportunity. He transported children to the Clemson Child Development Center, volunteered as director of boys recreation at Golden View Baptist Church Bible School, and then continued with a Golden View boys softball team. Also at First Baptist Church of Clemson he established popular new programs as recreation director. He served as treasurer of Calhoun Clemson PTO and was a committed supporter of Boys Home of the South.
In the community Alex particularly enjoyed giving his time and talents to construction projects, helping to build the Clemson community library, the Clemson Child Development Center, and several Habitat for Humanity homes.
His family especially remembers his integrity, his sense of humor, his hard work, his practicality, and his dedication to providing for them.
A memorial service will be conducted by the Reverend Todd Wilson at First Baptist Church of Clemson at 1:00 pm on Thursday, November 1, 2007. The family will receive visitors after the service.
