Allen R. Slone

Allen R Slone, MD, husband of Rebecca Douthit Slone, passed away peacefully on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 2008 at the United Methodist Manor in Florence, SC. Allen was born September 11, 1925. He was the son of the late John Cooper and Louise Robertson Slone of Alabama.

He was an eagle scout and graduated from Winfield High School in Winfield, Alabama in 1943. He earned his BS in Chemistry from Wofford College in 1949, his MS degree in Chemistry from Clemson University in 1951, and his MD degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1955. He served in the US Navy during WWII as a Navy corpsman attached to the Marines. He was stationed in the Pacific and was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation and a WWII ribbon with four battle stars.

He completed his residency and internship at McLeod Infirmary in Florence, SC. He had a private medical practice in Florence from 1956 1964 and was the part-time plant physician at DuPont from 1959 1964. After serving 22 years as Corporate Medical Director of Sonoco Products Co in Hartsville, SC, Dr Slone retired 1986.

During his career he served on many boards, was a member of/or held offices in many organizations including the American, SC, and Pee Dee Medical Associations, Carolina Industrial Medical Association, SC Academy of General Practice, SC Lung Association, Darlington County Cancer Society, Darlington County Mental Health Association, SC Heart Association, and the American Geriatric Society.

Allen was a member of St Luke United Methodist Church in Hartsville. He volunteered his time to teach Sunday School, serve on church boards and committees, assist the Boy Scouts, and was a member of the United Methodist Men. He was an active member of the Kairos Prison Ministry and the Hartsville Christmas in April project.

Having a thirst for knowledge he was an avid reader and had a passion for woodworking. He was a member of the Hartsville Woodworkers and often made furniture and items for his friends and family members.

Of all his interests, his family was most important to him. Surviving in addition to his wife of 60 years, are his three children Susan Douthit Slone of Denver, NC; Mary Louise Slone Finklea of Florence, SC; and John Allen Slone and his wife, Linda, of Rock Hill, SC. He was preceded in death by his eldest daughter, Rebecca Douthit Slone Hogan. He is also survived by four grandchildren. Joseph Benjamin Finklea and Thomas Alan Finklea of Florence, SC; and Travis Allen Slone and Lainey Nicole Slone of Rock Hill, SC.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 am Monday, December 1, 2008 in Sandy Springs, S.C. at the Sandy Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family requests memorials be sent to the Epworth Children's Home, PO Box 50466, Columbia, SC 29250 in lieu of flowers.
