Amy Laura Ligon Sowell, 78, wife of Melvin Edgeworth Sowell, Sr., of 1866 Farrs Bridge Road, passed away Sunday, August 14, 2011, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Born in Easley, Mrs. Sowell was a daughter of the late Henry Grace and Gracia Viola Carson Ligon. She graduated from Pickens High School in 1950, and she received a AA Degree from North Greenville Jr. College in 1952 and a B.S. degree from Winthrop College in 1954. Mrs. Sowell taught at Pickens High School for five years, and she was a homemaker. Mrs. Sowell was a member of First Baptist Church, Easley since 2005, and she was a former member of Pickens First Baptist from 1955 until 2005 and Cross Roads Baptist Church from her birth until 1955. She was a member of the Family and Community Leaders Club (former Home Demonstration Club), the Cedar Rock Club since 1953, Quilt Club, Pickens Garden Club since 1954 and she was a 4-H Volunteer Leader since 1972. Mr. and Mrs. Sowell were married at Cross Roads Baptist Church by the Rev. Junior "W.L." Freeman on June 19, 1955 after church on Sunday morning.
Surviving in addition to her husband of the home, are two sons, Melvin E. (Whit) Sowell, Jr., and his wife, Talley West Sowell of Easley and Charles (Chuck) H. Sowell, his wife Laurie Sowell and a grandson, Tyler Henry Sowell, all of Pickens; a brother, Dr. James T. "Jimmy" Ligon (Barbara) of Sandy Springs; two sisters, Mary Brooks of Laurens and Sarah Grace Foard (David) of Charlotte, NC.
Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m.Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Easley, with Rev. Dr. John Adams and Rev. Dr. Lloyd Batson officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Visitation will be will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday at Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown.
The family is at the residence.
