Anna Carole Clark Miles died March 14, 2026, in her home in Piedmont, SC. Carole was born on February 3, 1941, on her grandmother’s farm near Lynn Grove, Calloway County, Kentucky, the daughter of Mayrelle Jones Clark and Fred Clark.
The family will host a memorial service will be held June 15, 2026, at 4:30 at Bethesda United Methodist Church in Powdersville, SC. Carole’s remains will be interred alongside her husband Richard and son Robert in Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll, IL.
Carole grew up in Franklin Park, IL, and graduated from Leyden High School in 1958 as class valedictorian. She attended Beloit College, where she met Richard (Dick) Miles. Carole and Dick were married on February 2, 1961, in Dubuque, IA, and lived in Savannah, IL, Chicago, Maywood, IL, and Woodridge, IL, where they bought their first house. When her children Valerie, Richard, and Robert started school, Carole returned to college and ultimately earned her bachelor’s degree in education from North Central College in 1967.
In 1973, the family relocated to Raleigh, NC, when Dick was transferred by his employer, AMOCO. Carole was employed by the Wake County School District in 1974 and began teaching at North Ridge Elementary School, where she taught both fourth and sixth grades until 1985, when Dick was transferred again, and the two of them moved back to Naperville, IL.
After Dick’s retirement in 1993, they moved to the Greenville, SC area to be closer to family, settling in Piedmont, SC. Carole began working at Pentreath Construction in Greenville as an office administrator in 1995, continuing full and part-time work there until 2014. After Dick passed away in 2001, her son Robert became disabled and lived with her until he died in 2016. Carole was a member of the Bethesda United Methodist Church in Powdersville, SC.
Carole is survived by daughter Valerie (Robert) Muller, of Greenville, and son Richard, of Piedmont; brother Rod (Cindy) Clark, of McFarland, WI; sister-in-law Barbara Skean, of Princeton, IL; nephew Brett Skean, nieces Kara Skean, Meredith Clark, Dana Clark, Jenn Mueller and Kate Mueller; two grandsons Rick Fry and Nathan Muller and three great-grandsons- with a great-granddaughter expected in April of 2026.
Carole is preceded in death by husband Dick, son Robert, grandson Christopher, nephew Michael Skean, and parents Fred and Mayrelle Clark.
