Anna Lee Hopkins Pullen, 92, of Clemson, SC, passed away on October 26, 2016, after a long and brave battle with ovarian cancer. Anna was preceded in death by her parents, William Curtis Hopkins, Sr. and Ina Sue Bobbitt Hopkins, and by her husband of 61 years, George Brock Pullen. Also predeceasing Anna were two sisters and two brothers, Fredrick Herman Hopkins, Ina Sue Hopkins Backus, Sarah Louise Hopkins Dassing, and Floyd George Hopkins. She is survived by her four children, John Mark Pullen and wife, Cheryl, of Shepherdstown, WV; Sharon Anna Pullen Turner and husband, Aubrey, of Versailles, KY; David Brock Pullen and wife, Bettye, of North Augusta, SC; and Bruce Allen Pullen and wife, Elaine, of Lake Charles, LA. She is also survived by two brothers, William Curtis Hopkins, Jr. and wife, Betty, of Charleston, WV, and Raymond Neal Hopkins and wife, Ruth, of Williamsburg, WV. Additionally, she is survived by ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great- nephews. Being part of a vibrant, large and loving family was her greatest joy in life.

Anna was born in Huntington, WV, but grew up in Charleston and Putnam County, WV. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1942 and attended Morris Harvey College and West Virginia Wesylan College prior to her marriage in 1946. She returned to college after her children were all of school age and completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education in 1965 at West Virginia State University and her Master’s of Arts in Teaching degree at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC. in 1972. Anna taught in both West Virginia and South Carolina, in regular classrooms as well as in the area of special education for children and adult literacy programs. She retired from teaching in 1992. 

After many years in their beloved home state of West Virginia, the Pullens relocated to South Carolina in 1967 and lived in Sumter, Kingstree and Clemson during their years in South Carolina. She and her husband were members of the Pendleton United Methodist Church and were lifelong active members of Methodist churches wherever they lived. Anna loved music and was active in church and civic choirs throughout her life.  Anna was a talented seamstress and was named “Mrs. Homemaker of Charleston, WV,” at one time based in large part on her very fine sewing. She also loved gardening, birds, and plants. She and her husband loved the outdoors and traveling in their motor home, and she had visited all 50 states during her long life.

A memorial service and celebration of Anna’s life will be held at the Pendleton Methodist Church in Pendleton, SC, on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at 2:00 PM. Anna will be interred beside her husband in the churchyard there.
