Dot attended Mount Zion High School in Winnsboro, SC. Despite her dream of becoming a doctor, Dot immediately went to work in the local Five & Dime Store due to family needs. She transitioned to cleaning teeth for a local dentist and then on to U.S. Rubber Company. At the age of eighteen she began her 64-year marriage in Greenville, SC following a four-year, long distance courtship with Jim. After ten years, having one child (JimBo), and another (Susan) on the way, Dot and Jim moved to Clemson, SC. in order for Jim to begin college. After Susan was born, Dot went to work at J.P. Stevens Company to support Jim's efforts to secure a college degree. After college graduation, Jim took a job with Shell Oil Company. Following a brief stay in Columbia, SC, Jim and Dot moved their young family to Atlanta, GA. In Atlanta their family grew to three children with the birth of Ray. In 1966 the family moved to Knoxville, TN, where they lived for 33 years. With the children grown and Jim's subsequent retirement from Shell, Jim and Dot made their last move in 1999 to within a few miles of where they began their married life.

Dot's interests included Clemson University football, golf, bridge, family vacations to Fripp Island, and traveling with Jim. For years, Dot was a volunteer Red Cross nurse at her children's elementary school in Knoxville, TN. More recently, Dot was an attendee of First Baptist Church of Easley SC and Marion Moorehead Sunday School Class. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend.
