Ara Odus Phillips, 86, died Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson. Born in Landrum, SC he was the son of the late T.A. and Agnes Blanton Phillips. He retired from the Clemson police department and worked in the textile industry at Cannon Mills, Woodside Mills and with the Millikin Company. He was a veteran of World Ward II serving with the Yankee Division and was in the Battle of the Bulge serving as a Heavy Machine Gunner. He received a Purple Heart, American Theatre Ribbon and was awarded 4 Distinguished Service Stars.

He is survived by son, Dr. Larry Phillips and wife Kathy of Taylorsville, NC and brother H. C. (Ham) Phillips of Central; 2 grandchildren, L. Scott Phillips of Knoxville, TN and Laura Le Phillips McClure of Lansing, NC. and 5 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by wife, Hazel Elrod Phillips and son, Rodney (Ron) Phillips.

Funeral services will be held in the chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, Central at 3pm Saturday with burial to follow at Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1-3pm Saturday prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621
