Audra Lea Phelon McPeak, 84, widow of Thomas E. McPeak passed away, Saturday, January 4, 2020 at the McCall Hospice House in Simpsonville, SC.
Mrs. McPeak was born in Lyndon, Kansas, a daughter of the late Charles Alvah and Leah Odor Phelon. She was a 1958 graduate of University of Kansas earning her Bachelor's in Nursing degree and later earned her Master's in Nursing from Clemson University [1988]. She worked for Theordore E. Young, a pediatrician, in Topeka, Kansas after completing her degree. Upon moving to Tallmadge, Ohio, Mrs. McPeak sought an opportunity to continue her work with children at St. Thomas Hospital where she also began teaching nursing. Later she would teach classes at Clemson University before taking a position at Tri-County Technical College in July 1976 as the head of the Medical Administration Technician Program which was a part of the Comprehensive Manpower Program. In 1978, she began chairing the Medical Assisting Program until becoming an instructor in the Associate Degree Nursing Program in 1981. She remained in that position until July of 1990 when she became the Chair of the Associate Degree Nursing Program before moving to the Chair of the Health Education Division in December of that year. She remained in this position until her retirement in September of 2002.
At the University of Kansas she was a member of Alpha Phi sorority and along with many other nursing associations. In her later years she was involved in the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). She enjoyed reading, sewing, cooking, quilting, gardening and spending time with family and friends near and far.
Surviving are sons, Shawn McPeak and Timothy McPeak both of Clemson; daughters, Michele Strickland (Frank) of Seneca, Mary Von Kaenel (Karl) of Clemson, Erin McPeak of Greenville, and Aimee Dunnam (Daniel) of Royse City, TX; sisters, Rita Melton and Deanna Hayes both of Topeka, Kansas; grandchildren, Risa Linford (David), Karin Raymond (Robert), John Von Kaenel (Grace), Samantha Kennedy, Connor McPeak, Phoebe McPeak and Leah Strickland; and great grandchildren, Daniel Raymond and Kristin Raymond; and many loved nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be 2 pm, Saturday, January 11, 2020 in the chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home. The family will greet friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.
