Barbara Ann Bechtel Armstrong, 82, of Clemson, wife to the late Alan S. Armstrong, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on September 20, 2021.
Born in Omaha, NE, she was the daughter of the late George M. and Margaret E. Bechtel. She graduated from the University of Kansas with an M.S. in Microbiology in 1966. Mrs. Armstrong was a stay-at-home mom until 1980, when she went to work at Abbott Laboratories to help send her daughters to college. Barbara and Alan moved to South Carolina in 1997 to live in Keowee Key, Salem, Beacon Shores, Seneca and finally Patrick Square, Clemson in 2012.
She was an active member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Clemson, serving on the Altar Guild and in pastoral care ministry. Barbara loved gardening, reading, puzzles and caring for those around her.
Mrs. Armstrong is survived by her daughters, Jane Elizabeth Armstrong Jones (Matthew) and Barbara Lynne Armstrong Devine (Dr. James); grandchildren, Alec Jones and Bryan Jones; step grandchildren, Jed Devine (Laura) and Mary Devine Mastroianni (Michael); great grandchildren, Trey Devine and Max Mastroianni; sister, Patricia Bechtel Winter (Mandell); sister-in-law, Beverly Armstrong Barringer; niece, Deborah Barringer Brooks (Dr. Kerry); nephews, Mandell S. Winter (Bari), Benjamin Winter and John Cram (Meghan).
She is predeceased by her husband, parents, sister, Betty Bechtel Cram, and brother, John Kirkpatrick.
A memorial service will be held on November 22, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Clemson.
