Bernice Graham
- CLEMSON

Bernice Bigby Graham, loving wife of John Smith Graham Sr., died on March 1, 2009.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years; four children, Elaine Graham Heller (Bob) of Clemson, Betty Graham Shewfelt (Rob) of Forsyth GA, John S. Graham Jr. (Cynthia) of Raleigh NC, and Robert W. Graham (Kathy) of Honea Path; seven grandchildren, Robert G. Heller Jr. (Alice) of Clemson, Richard Graham Heller Sr. (Lane) of Hoschton GA; Mandy Graham, Jennifer Noel Graham, and Ben Graham of Honea Path; Nathan Ripperton of Seattle WA, and Isabelle Graham of Raleigh NC; and six great-grandchildren, Robert G. Heller III and Taylor J. Heller of Clemson, and Richard Graham Heller Jr., Anna Heller, Sarah Heller, and Reid Heller of Hoschton GA.

Born on her Grandmother Maggie Tate's family farm in Anderson County in August 1921, she was the only child of the late Myrtle and Herman Bigby. She was only two years old when her father died, and she spent her childhood learning about farm life, which she loved all her life. She graduated from Winthrop College and married John in the First Baptist Church of Clemson on February 13, 1942. Her career included work as a legal secretary, then secretary for the Clemson Agricultural Extension Service. She was devoted to her family, her church, her community, and her profession. At a dinner celebration at their 60th anniversary, a waitress asked her the secret of staying married so long. "Marrying the right person the first time," she replied.

Graveside services will be held Monday, March 9, at 2:00 at Woodland Cemetery (Cemetery Hill) in Clemson.

The family requests that memorials in lieu of flowers be offered to the First Baptist Church of Clemson, or to a charity of choice.
