Bertie Mae Smith Bowles, passed away on Saturday, August 10, 2024.
Born on June 22, 1932 in Easley, South Carolina, a daughter to the late Otis Austin Smith and the late Gladys Estelle Kirk Smith. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who had a gift of hospitality, a spirit of discernment and an immense love for her family and friends. Mrs. Bowles retired from Sears Roebuck Credit Central in Dallas, Texas. She was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church in Easley, South Carolina. For the past five years, she resided in assisted living in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Preceding her in death was her husband of 67 years, Derald Wesley Bowles; her two brothers, Edgar Austin Smith and Tony Lee Smith; along with five sisters, Bobbie Jean Burgess, Ruby Jack Smith, Nancy Carol Pace, Judith Elaine LaBoone and Brenda Gail Chapman.
Left to cherish her memory are her children; Austin (Cindy) Bowles of Las Vegas, NV and Lisa (Mark) Mowery of Chattanooga, TN; her grandchildren Misty Johnson of Hendersonville, NC, Emily (Brian) Bartlett of Galivants Ferry, SC, Avery Bowles of Las Vegas, NV, Steven (Yumi) Hurlbut of Seoul, South Korea, Lori (Doug) Hollowell of Olive Branch, MS; her great-grandsons Jeremiah Johnson of Austin, TX; Evan Bartlett of Galivants Ferry, SC and Jacob Johnson of Hendersonville, NC; she also considered her 20 bonus grandchildren and great-grandchildren as part of family as well.
Also surviving are two sisters, Shirley Ann Wood of Chesnee, SC and Mary Estelle Camp of Easley, SC.
Graveside services will be held at 3:30 on Friday, August 16, 2024, where Mrs. Bowles will be laid to rest in the Veterans Garden of Honor of Robinson Memorial Gardens, Easley, South Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Martin Boyd Christian Home, 6845 Standifer Gap Road, Chattanooga, Tennessee 37421 or to Hospice of Chattanooga, 2030 Hamilton Pl Boulevard, Ste. 220, Chattanooga, Tennessee 37421.
