Bess Moses Hammond,104, wife of the late Alexander Francis Hammond of Clemson, SC, died peacefully on October 17, 2024. Born in Sumter, SC, she was the daughter of the late Jack and Bessie Moses.
She is survived by a daughter and her husband, JacqueLyn and Frank Dennison of Augusta GA, a son and his wife, Hugh and Cindy Hammond of Charlotte NC, grandson Steven Dennison and his wife Mary Beth of Statesboro, GA and their children Averi, Anna Beckett, and Brock, grandson Nathan Hammond and his wife Wendy Cheung of Hong Kong and their children Adelyn and Ellarie, and grandson Devin Hammond of Charlotte NC. She was preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law, Celeste and Bert Hubbard. She greatly loved all her many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
She was a 1941 graduate of Winthrop College where she majored in English and met her future husband on a blind date. During the war, she served as the first educational director of First Baptist Church in Gainesville, GA – a position she loved – for almost two years.
After the war, she married her sweetheart who had returned from overseas. They moved to Clemson in 1946 and started their family life together. She was actively involved in the Clemson community, with many friends and neighbors.
Once in Clemson, while waiting for a teaching position to open, she served as secretary at Clemson Baptist Church (now First Baptist Church of Clemson) for a little over a year. She was a member there for the rest of her life where she was actively involved in all aspects of her church community. One of her favorite contributions was teaching English as a Second Language to the wives of international students, leading to many enduring friendships.
She delighted in young children, teaching 1st and 2nd grade before becoming an elementary school librarian until her retirement at Morrison Elementary School.
Her life was centered around her church, the children she taught, and her family she loved and who loved her.
The family appreciates her wonderful long term caregivers, Shelia Hines, Sharon Lee, Teresa Trimmier, and Chaira Trimmier, as well as many others who gave her loving care during her final years.
A celebration of Bess’s life will be held on Sunday, November 17, 2024 at 1:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Clemson, 397 College Avenue, Clemson. The family will receive friends following the service.
