Beth Gillespie Blackman, 87, of Central, wife of the late Sam Major Blackman, died Thursday, December 4, 2008 at the Sterling House of Central.

Born in Seneca, she was a daughter of the late Charles Darby and Olive Abbott Gillespie. Mrs. Blackman graduated from Seneca High School in 1938 and then earned a BA degree from Winthrop College in 1942 and did some graduate work at Auburn University. She taught school for 41 years, beginning with Calhoun Falls High School, 1942-1944 and 1958-1985; Pendleton High School, 1944-1947; and LaGrange High School, 1947-1955. Mrs. Blackman was a member of First Baptist Church, Calhoun Falls and a former member of Seneca Baptist Church. She loved animals, spending time with her family, was a long time member of IPTAY, and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Surviving are a son, Sammy Blackman, a daughter, Karen Blackman and husband Alan Gall, all of Central, and a brother, Charles Gillespie and wife Margaret of Westminster. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Mildred Gillespie Cleveland.

Funeral service will be 11 AM Monday in the chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home with burial to follow in Oconee Memorial Park.

Visitation will be prior to the service on Monday from 10 until 11 AM at the funeral home.
