Betty (Comer) Clemens, 91, of Selma, Indiana, formerly of Central, South Carolina, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on the afternoon of Saturday, January 5, 2019 at Parker Healthcare, in Parker City, Indiana.
She was born on November 24, 1927, in Gastonia, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Elmer Gwynn and Ruth Irene (Kincaid) Comer.
Betty was raised by her grandparents, James Everet and Lula Mae (Hollingsworth) Comer in Knoxville, TN. She left for Central Wesleyan Boarding School in 8th grade in Central, S.C. where she finished high school. Betty graduated from Central Wesleyan College, now Southern Wesleyan University, in Central, S.C. where she majored in voice. Betty sang all over the south in camp meetings and revivals. While at Central Wesleyan she met the love of her life, Rev. A.C. Clemens. They were married on August 12, 1948 and enjoyed 70 years of companionship. Betty was a faithful pastor's wife serving with her husband in Wesleyan churches in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina. She was always available and ready to minister, especially to children. Her heart throb was camp meetings, revivals and mission services. Betty was a member of Trinity Wesleyan Church in Central, SC. She was an excellent cook and she loved going to garage sales and finding special knickknacks. She was quick with her distinctive laugh and made everyone feel comfortable. Betty was always singing and quoting scripture even in failing health.
Betty went back to school and received her LPN while in Birmingham, Alabama. Those whom she worked with fell in love with her from the start and no job was too small if it met the care and comfort of a hurting patient.
Those left to cherish Betty's memory include her husband, Rev. A.C. Clemens; three sons, Stephen (wife: Sheryl) Clemens of Muncie, IN, Jonathan (wife: Becky) Clemens of Covington, GA, and Paul (wife: Robyn) Clemens of Cincinnati, OH; seven grandchildren, Stephenie (husband: Phil) Brugger of New Bloomington, OH, Shawn (wife: Melanie) Clemens of Muncie, IN, Scott (wife: Kristina) Clemens of New Castle, IN, Mark (wife: Joy) Clemens of Canton, GA, David Clemens of Covington, GA, Rachel (husband: Kevin) Easley of Milford, OH, Beth (husband: Jon) Avery of Blue Ash, OH; 21 great-grandchildren and a cousin/sister Billie Faye Harvey of Central, SC.
In addition to her parents and grandparents, Betty was preceded in death by a son, Clifford "Buddy" Clemens and an infant sister, Jacqueline Louise Comer.
