Betty Dickson Long of 108 Mitchell Ave, Clemson, South Carolina passed away peacefully Thursday. Aged 92, the wife of the late Jim T. Long, will be remembered as a special soul who deeply cared for those around her.
Born in Piedmont on December 16th, 1925. Betty spent her formative years in Piedmont, Montreal and Greensboro, N.C. Returning to graduate from Piedmont High School where she met Jim, who was the apple of her eye from the day they were introduced.
Her passion was education, she attained a bachelors degree from Furman after an associates degree from Anderson College. Going on to graduate with a masters in education from Clemson and eventually coming full circle teaching in the Oconee County school system. As a first grade teacher, her focus was that each student had an excellent chance at reading comprehension.
An active member of the Fort Hill Presbyterian Church, she was an unrivaled Tiger fan who stayed up to date on everything from signing day to the national title game. Betty enjoyed the game of tennis, the grace of figure skating, the challenge of bridge, and the beauty of bird watching — her favorite the hummingbird.
She is survived by her son Jim T. Long Jr. M.D. and his wife Cathy R. Long M.D. of Franklin, N.C. Granddaughter Mary Elizabeth and husband Kevin Burant of Chicago. Granddaughter Carrie Mae Long Ph.D of Hamilton, Montana. Brother-in-law Joe Long and wife Maria of Greensboro. And her sister, Gail Rosenthal of Mauldin, S.C.
The Long family will receive friends on Sunday, February 11th at 1:00P.M. at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home in Central. Service will be held at 10:00AM on Monday, February 12th at Fort Hill Presbyterian Church in Clemson with a reception to follow. Then a grave side service for friends and family afterward at Shiloh United Methodist Cemetery in Piedmont. Coming full circle, Betty will be buried less than a mile from where she was born; a descendant from some of the original settlers of the upstate.
