Betty Joan Chappell Whitmire, 70, wife of Haskell "Butch" Whitmire, died Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at her home.

Born in Central, she was a daughter of the late Elbert W. and Thelma Gillespie Chappell. Betty was a 1964 graduate of Liberty High School and was the co-owner and manager of Midway Grocery. She also substitute taught for the Pickens County School District. She attended Cannon Memorial Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband of the home, are her daughter, Amanda Jo Whitmire Cope and husband Ryan of Central; sister, Peggy Chappell Mullinex of Central; granddaughter, Thelma Clarice Cope of New York City, NY; 2 nieces, Suzy Chappell Wilbanks and Leigh Chappell Budgen; 2 great nieces; and 3 great nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Harold Leon Chappell.

Funeral services will be 4 PM, Friday at Cannon Memorial Baptist Church with burial to follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 3:45 PM, Friday at the church prior to the service.
