Bobbie Rogers
- Easley, SC
Bobbie Grantland Rogers of 800 East Second Avenue, wife of J. Harold Rogers, died Tuesday evening, February 9, 2010, at Baptist Easley Hospital after losing a long, strong and courageous battle with Parkinson's. She was 81 and had been diagnosed with the crippling, neuro-muscular disease in 1978.
Born in Augusta, Georgia, Bobbie was the daughter of the late John F. and Grace Martin Grantland of Anderson. The Martins were prominent farmers of Townville, and the Grantlands had family connections with American sports writing giant, Grantland Rice.
An honor graduate of Anderson Girl's High School and graduate of Anderson College, she was married and had her first child before returning to Lander College to get her four-year degree. She excelled in teaching in Greenwood, Greenville and Easley. Previously, she had been a teacher at Walker-McElmoyle School in upper Anderson County with a two-year degree.
Settling in Easley, Bobbie was on staff at East End Elementary School, then moved to West End. At the latter, she was named teacher of the year in 1980 and also asked to join the ADK Sisters of Xi Chapter, National Teachers Sorority.
Her family and teaching were her life, but she found time to become a charter member of the Dorothy O. Scott Garden Club and served as Storyteller for children at the Pickens County Library. When she could fit it in, bridge was a passion. Mrs. Rogers was a member of First Baptist Church, Easley.
Surviving are her husband of nearly sixty years, J. Harold Rogers, of the home and former editor of the Easley Progress; two sons, Rev. Richard (Dale) Rogers of Roanoke Rapids, N.C. and John Rodney Rogers (Monica), of Easley; two daughters, Mary Ann (Hal) Fisher of Oxford, GA and Laurie (Russell) Masters of Easley. Bobbie also leaves a beloved brother, Wallace Grantland of Anderson.
Her six grandchildren are Kristin Masters Miller of Greenville, Kelli Zane Masters of Easley, Travis Fisher of Conyers, GA, Wil and Dylan Fisher of Oxford, and Grantland Joseph Rogers of Easley. There are three great-grandchildren, Joanna and Madelyn Fisher of Conyers, and Russell Price Miller of Greenville.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Friday in the chapel of First Baptist Church Easley with Rev. Dr. John Adams and Rev. Rick Rogers officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
Visitation will be from 1:00 until 2:00 PM Friday at the church, prior to the service.
The family wishes to extend their deepest heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Steven Freeman as well as the nurses and staff at Baptist Easley Hospital for their compassionate, professional and personal care.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in Bobbie's memory to Easley First Baptist Church for children's ministries, 300 East First Avenue; Easley, SC 29640.
The family is at the home of Rodney and Monica Rogers, 742 Shefwood Drive, Easley, SC 29642.
