Olin Dewitt "Buddy" Newell, 76, husband of Diane Black Newell, passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at Rainey Hospice House of the Upstate in Anderson.
Born in Liberty, to the late Furman and Bessie Moser Newell, Buddy was a Mason at the Bates Lodge #189. He was raised a Master Mason in Bates Lodge #189, AFM May 27, 1967, served as a Worshipful Master in 1975 and 1997, and served as Treasurer for many years. He was Exalted a Royal Arch Mason in Pickens Chapter #47, RAM February 26, 1968. He served as Excellent High Priest in 1992 and as Treasurer from 2001 until 2012. Buddy was knighted a Knight of Templar in Greenville Commandery #4, KT on May 13, 1968 and was a Charter Member of Easley Commandery #21, KT where he served as Eminent Commander in 1992, and as Treasurer from 2001 until 2012. By virtue of having served as Presiding Officer of all the above bodies, he was inducted into Palmetto Priory #54, Knights of the York Cross of Honour. He was a forty year life member of the Bates Lodge and a Perpetual Life Member of Pickens Chapter #47, RAM, Pickens Council #34, R&SM and Easley Commandery #21, KT. His support and service to the masonry will be missed. Buddy was also a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of thirty-nine years, are four daughters, Deena Allison (Ken), Sandra Stokes (David), Lori Brown (Shane), and Donna Anderson (Jeff); four grandchildren, Layla Allison, Tyler Brown, and Kristian and Kadence Anderson; and a sister-in-law, Marie Newell.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Furman "Curly" Newell; and a sister, Blanche N. Pilgrim.
A graveside service will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, January 26, 2013 at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Easley.
A visitation will be from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Friday at Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown.
