Leon Gibbs
Clemson/Central, Leon Gibbs, 90, died Saturday, October 8, 2016 with his family in Central, SC after a recent diagnosis of an inoperable mass.
He was born February 14, 1926 in Reidsville, NC son of the late James Marvin and Carolyn Holt Gibbs. Leon grew up on the family homestead before entering Elon College in 1942 at the age of 16. After graduating, he joined the Army Air Corps. Following the war, he entered Duke University graduating in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. He began his career with Duke Power Company in Charlotte, NC. He retired in 1997 as Vice President of SP Associates in Charlotte, NC.
A longtime member of the Northside Rotary Club in Charlotte, NC, Leon practiced their motto “Service before Self”. For many years he was a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, the Appalachian Service Project, and regularly led a bible study at the local prison. He enjoyed collecting stamps, coins, and gardening. He loved people and relished making them laugh. He was intentional in helping others grow in their personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
He was a longtime member of Providence United Methodist Church in Charlotte, NC and after moving to Clemson, SC joined Clemson United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his daughter, Nanelyn Gibbs Mitchell and sons: H. Sloan Gibbs, E. Bryan Gibbs, Samuel V. Gibbs, J. Marvin Gibbs II, and Richard Leon Gibbs and grandchildren: Rachel Tucker, Walter H. Floyd IV, Alyssa Brames, Anna Gibbs, Grace Gibbs, Elizabeth Gibbs, Blake Gibbs, and Christian Gibbs.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Anne Sloan Gibbs, originally from Franklin, NC and his brothers: William Bryan Gibbs, formerly of Burlington, NC and Eugene S. Gibbs, formerly of Reidsville, NC.
A Worship of God and Celebration of Leon’s Life will be held on Friday, October 21, 2016 at 1pm Clemson United Methodist Church in Clemson, SC.
Leon donated his body for medical research at Duke University and his cremated remains will be interned at a later date at Providence United Methodist Church in Charlotte, NC.
