Dr. Clovie Julia Etta Heaton, daughter of late Ruby Philips and Joe Benson Heaton, Sr passed away on Tuesday after a period of declining health.

Dr. Julia Heaton graduated from Easley High School and earned a BA in Sociology from Furman University. She was the first woman to graduate with Master Education, and only woman to obtain Master Education from Clemson University. She received a Doctorate of Administration from the University of South Carolina. all degrees earned while teaching full time; taught two years during teacher shortage with no degree and a Certificate. Certified in South Carolina as secondary principal, superintendent, biology and social studies. Certified in Alabama as principal, supervisor and superintendent.

Grants for study: Natural Science Foundation Grant to be part of team to produce a supplementary text in the behavioral sciences for use in the Public Schools. Robert F. Tact Grant to produce guidelines for teachers use in Civics and History ? Clemson University ? first RAT Grant won at Clemson. Grant/Workshop for Teaching of the Holocaust, unit had to be produced for use by teachers. Humanities grant for College of Charleston for supplemental materials for teaching History. New South Comes of Age Grant for teaching the South's place in History. WE also had to do seminars. Southern Economics Grant ? University of Alabama Tuscaloosa for more effective teaching of High School Economics; we produced a supplemental text for classroom use.
Awards and Honors: Connections; Women Leaders of the Upstate, Furman University; Dream Achievers (first year awarded) ? WYCA Greenville; part of Amy Stubbs event recognizing Upstate Women Leaders; Bi-Centennial Award for Educational Leaders statewide ? Clemson University; presenter at Southeastern Social Studies Council (part of National) for unit on Southern Culture ? Charleston South Carolina panel participant or Southern Women's History ? Charleston South Carolina. Georgia Sociological Society for Unit on Culture ? Atlanta Georgia. National Council of Jewish Women (life member), Greenville Section ? two years a Treasurer and seven years as President (longest Presidential term for this Chapter) although a Christian! Many other honors and awards but these were Aunt Judy's prized ones.

Work History ? while in High School and College ? Sarlin's Department Store; the Clemson House; Tony's Restaurant (the oldest Italian Restaurant on Grand Strand) Garrett's Department Store. After college, Manager at Ocean Drive Chamber of Commerce (before beaches merged and became North Myrtle Beach) East Cherry Grove Development Corporation. Returning Upstate to finish at Furman, teaching at Dacusville High School, Marshall Elementary, Berea High, Greenville High, and teaching seventeen years at her beloved Southside High where she also served as an Administrator. She left Southside to teach at another love, Limestone College in Gaffney. During her teaching career she taught Social Studies, Social Sciences, French I and II, Biology and English. At Limestone, she taught Behavioral / Social Sciences, Business, Introductory Social Worker Course, and Research and Statistics. While an educator, Aunt Judy believed in Professionalism. She belonged to many Professional Organizations, too numerous to mention, and upgraded her knowledgebase where she could.
Julia Heaton is preceded by her much loved brothers, Joe B. Heaton and Kenneth E. Heaton and beloved sister-in-law, Patsy C. Heaton and Sister ,Jennifer Evonne Heaton. Survivors: Sister-in-law, Laura Pickens Heaton. Nieces; Josephine Smith, Teresa (Scott) Shilling; Nephews: Andrew (Margo) Heaton, Gary (Beth) Nelson, Julius Heaton and Patrick Heaton. Great Nieces; Laura Heaton, Julia Heaton (Namesake), Lindsey (Cole) Reissig, Michelle Heaton and Christina Heaton; Great Great Niece; Hadley Shilling. Great Nephews: Bradley Shilling, Hayden Smith, Douglas Shilling. Friend (Like a Sister) Dr. Kathryn Arden and her children , Joseph, Daniel and Tina Weiss Glass.
Aunt Judy loved her family and their children. She was so thankful for each one of them in her life. Her beloved friends (too numerous to mention) you know who you are! She loved so, and to all her beloved NCJW members and Beth Israel Synagogue friends, she thanks and loved you.
Aunt Judy loved Opera, Classical Music and Broadway shows. She knew very little Country music but she heard a song called "I Hope You Dance" on Jay Leno and said the lyrics to that song are what she wished for all her friends and family. In her memory, look up the lyrics please and know that Aunt Judy wanted you to dance. She loved you all!
Aunt Judy has always said God has blessed her although she did not deserve it. She loved to travel, and eat at nice restaurants. She loved dinner parties and cookouts and attended many plays and concerts. Today she is talking again and re-uniting with friends and family. She is in no more pain.
To my God for a wonderful life in spite of problems, I thank you and am now with you. To God be the Glory, great things He has done.

Graveside services and burial will be 2:00 pm Sunday January 25, 2015 in Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6:00 pm until 7:30 pm Saturday at Robinson Funeral Home ? Downtown.

Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
