Carl Willis Ackerman of Clemson passed away at his home on Thursday, December 12, 2013.
Born August 12, 1931, in Charleston, SC he was the son of the late Clyde O. and Carrie Lou Willis Ackerman. He grew up in Cottageville, SC, graduated from Clemson A & M College in 1953 with a BS degree in Animal Husbandry and an MS degree from Clemson University in 1960.
He served 21 months active duty in the US Army at Ft. Benning, GA and Fort Sill, Lawton Oklahoma. He served approximately 30 years in the U. S. Army Reserves, retiring with the rank of Colonel in 1991.
He began working for Clemson University in 1955 as Assistant County Agent in Orangeburg County. In April of 1962 he joined Clemson University State staff and worked as Professor of Animal Science for Clemson University Extension Service until his retirement in 1987.
He was a member of Clemson United Methodist Church for over fifty years and also an affiliate member of Edisto Island United Methodist Church, Edisto Beach, SC. He was a member of the Clemson Fellowship Club and the Clemson Lions Club, having served as Club President and later as district Governor of District 32A.
Thoroughly enjoying his retirement years, he and Carol traveled to many parts of the U. S. and the world. Carl loved hunting, fishing, and everything Clemson. He particularly loved spending time with his family, especially his ten grandchildren. Edisto Beach was a special place to him and his family.
He is survived by his wife Carol, of 59 years, a sister, Virginia McDonald of Raleigh, NC, a brother, Mack Ackerman (Patricia) of Anderson; son, Carl Ackerman, Jr. (Christie), of Clemson, daughters, Susan A. Williams (Charlie), of Florence, Anne A. Sadler (David), of Charleston and Kathy A. Cottrell (Roger), of Greenville; grandchildren, April A. Beckwith (Harrison), Christopher Williams (Katie), Julianne Williams (fianc�e Seth Sherard), David Sadler (fianc�e Juliann Giberson), John Sadler, David Cottrell, Cary Cottrell, Taylor Cottrell, Thomas Cottrell, and Trey Cottrell. He was predeceased by brother, Clyde O. Ackerman.
A celebration of his life will be held Sunday, December 15, 2013 at 3:00 P. M. at Clemson United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
