Carl Barnes Bishop, 93, resident of Central South Carolina, and husband of late wife, Muriel Boyd Bishop, passed away on Friday, February 20th, 2026.
Carl was born in Bamberg, SC, the son of the late Charlie Carl Bishop and Reba Barnes Bishop. Carl’s pursuit of knowledge began at Clemson College where he graduated in 1954 with a degree in Chemistry and earned his Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from Michigan State University. Carl was a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army and was a professor of Chemistry at Clemson University for 32 years. He and his wife were nicknamed “Ma and Pa” of the Chemistry Department over the course of their career. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Clemson for over 75 years and an active member of the community who taught Men’s Sunday School, member of the Clemson University Alumni Senior Platoon, Clemson’s Lions Club, and Rotary Club.
In addition to his parents and wife, Carl was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Reba Bishop Murray.
He is survived by his daughter, Kathryn Bishop Setzer; two grandchildren, Zachary Randall Setzer (Lauren and daughter, Avery Setzer) and Shannon Kathryn Evans (Ty Evans); two step-grandchildren, Rhonda Nicole Blake and Joshua Edwin Setzer and six step-great grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 15, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Clemson. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
A private burial will be held at Woodland Cemetery on the campus of Clemson University.
Those who wish to remember Carl in a special way may make gifts in his memory to the Dr. Carl B. Bishop ’54 & Dr. Muriel B. Bishop Scholarship Endowment at Clemson University.
