Easley
Carl Ernest Metzger, 88, returned to HIM who gave him on Saturday, September 6, 2014. He went peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends.
Carl was born in Union, SC, the son of the late Ernest William and Nell Hendrick Metzger. At thirteen, the family moved to Darlington where he graduated from St. John's High School in 1943. He served in the Navy during WWII in the Pacific theater. Upon completion of his service he attended Newberry College.
Carl retired from Platt-Saco-Lowell as Manager of Engineering in 1990, after forty-one years of service. He was a long time member of Easley First Baptist Church serving as a Deacon Emeritus, former Sunday school director, teacher and numerous other committees. He volunteered for seventeen years with the Pickens County Literary Assn. in their Each-one-teach-one program. He was a member of the Lion's Club and was active in many other community organizations. Carl's fondest passion was wood-working in his back yard workshop. He created ornaments for family and friends each Christmas as wells as countless stools, tables and other useful wooden objects. He also enjoyed being with family and friends, reading, dining out and traveling.
Surviving are his loving wife of sixty-four years, Barbara Erwin Metzger; his adored son, Carl Michael (wife Janice) of Columbia; and two grandchildren, Carlie Erwin and Jordan Foshee. He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Catherine Waters.
Visitation followed by a funeral service will be held Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at Easley First Baptist Church beginning at 12:30 P.M. until 1:45 P.M. The service will follow at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Dr. John Adams and Rev. Rick Baumgarner officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park with Military Honors.
