Carolyn Ezell Foster died on Saturday, April 15, 2023, having just celebrated her 98th birthday. Carolyn was born in New Orleans on April 6, 1925, the first child of Dr. Humphrey K. and Mildred Nance Ezell. At age four, she moved with her family to the Upstate of South Carolina. Carolyn held two master’s degrees: one in journalism from Emory University and one in English from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She also had an undergraduate minor in math and said that she particularly loved teaching that subject. She taught for over forty years in many locations – North and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Oregon, and California. She spent over fifty years in research, writing, and editing. She moved to Clemson in 1985, caring for her mother and younger brother while teaching English at Clemson University and later working in the Finance Department. She was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, and she edited a three-volume series of the lectionary readings used for children’s services at Holy Trinity, as well as at many other churches.
Carolyn was preceded in death by two brothers, Dr. H.K. Ezell III and Joseph L. Ezell. She is survived by her children, Kevin Foster (Roxana Cortes) of Altamonte Springs, Florida, and Julie (now Kiera) Ezell (Charles Martin Muller) of Portland, Oregon, three grandchildren, Olan Muller and Laura and Melanie Foster, sister-in-law Jane Scarpa Ezell Hamrick, and nieces Mary Nance Ezell McDonough (Terrence) and Carol Ezell Gilson (Tom).
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, May 13th at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 193 Old Greenville Hwy, Clemson, SC 29630.
