Carolyn B. Holcombe, 84, of Liberty, wife of the late Dr. Jake K. Holcombe, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, December 7, 2021.
Mrs. Holcombe was born in Sumter, SC and raised in Charleston, SC. Her parents Raymond E. Brown and Virginia Mimms Brown, preceded her in death. Remaining family members include her daughter, Virginia Renee Holcombe of Easley, her "grand-pup", Asher and a brother, George R. Brown of Columbia SC. Mrs. Holcombe attended Winthrop College and spent her school breaks at home in Charleston. She met her future husband on a blind date in Charleston while he was attending medical school. Mrs. Holcombe eventually left her studies at Winthrop early to receive her "Mrs." Degree.
Mrs. Holcombe was active in her community and enjoyed helping others. For many years she was an active member of the Medical Auxiliary of Pickens County. She worked diligently in the town of Liberty with the Liberty Development Association, a grant program with a goal to revitalize the town and attract new business to the town and county. She was a tireless volunteer for The American Heart Association and The Cancer Society. Mrs. Holcombe was a natural event planner and enjoyed organizing successful events and fundraisers for charitable causes. During the 1970's, Mrs. Holcombe volunteered and hosted the weekly story hour for children at the Sarlin Community Library in Liberty, SC. Her story telling legacy was revived in the 1990's through early 2000 when she and her doll "Sarah" began story hour at the Liberty Elementary School. The objective of story hour was to encourage reading and a love for books to young children. Mrs. Holcombe enjoyed decorating, floral arranging and entertaining. Hosting large groups of neighbors and young people after Friday night ball games was one of her joys. She is often remembered for her quick wit and humor.
A memorial celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, December 16, 2021 at 2 p.m. in the Robinson Memorial Gardens Chapel of Reflection Mausoleum on Powdersville Road, Easley SC.
