Catherine H. Beattie

Catherine Pace Hamrick Beattie, 84, of 30 Woodland Way, died Thursday, February 5, 2009, at St. Francis Hospital.
Born in Gaffney on May 31 1924, Mrs. Beattie was a daughter of the late Lyman Abbott and Catherine Pace Hamrick. She was the valedictorian of Gaffney High School. Attending Arlington Hall, Washington, D.C., Hollins College, she graduated in 1945 from Converse College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Mrs. Beattie studied interior design at Barmore Institute, New York; upon returning home to Gaffney she worked for Hamrick Mills in product design.
After meeting and falling in love with Samuel Marshall Beattie, she relocated to his native Greenville, S.C. to start a family and became an active member of the community. Mrs. Beattie was a communicant of Christ Church, where she belonged to the Altar Guild and the Order of St. Luke.
Mrs. Beattie served as a director and board member of the Garden Club of America, and from 1981-1983, she served as its President. Established in her honor The Catherine Beattie Medal was established as an annual award for a horticulture entry "distinguished by its vibrancy, prime condition, and perfection of grooming" at the national flower show
as well as, The Catherine H. Beattie Fellowship for Conservation Horticulture scholarship.
In addition, Mrs. Beattie was a member of Carolina Foothills Garden Club in Greenville and the Colony Club in New York. She belonged to The Junior League, The Assembly, and The Quadrille. Mrs. Beattie also served as a board member of the YWCA, the Greenville Symphony and Gateway House.
Surviving are two sons, Pace Hamrick Beattie, of Chicago, Illinois and William Fullerton Beattie, of Greenville; one brother, Wylie Lyman Hamrick, of Gaffney; and five grandchildren: Mark Christopher Beattie, Pace Marshall Beattie, Hugh Sharad Beattie, William Edgeworth Beattie, and Elizabeth Richardson Beattie. Mrs. Beattie was predeceased by her husband, Samuel Marshall Beattie, Jr.; and two sons, Marshall Samuel Beattie and Alan Lyman Beattie.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Sunday, February 8, at Christ Church Episcopal. Burial will follow in the churchyard.
The family will receive friends at Mrs. Beattie's residence on Saturday, February 7, from 3:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M.
