Charles R. Atkins Jr., 77, of Easley, SC, affectionately known as "Charlie," was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to Charles R Atkins Sr. and Lucy Mae Cheatem Atkins. He departed this life on October 28, 2024.
Charlie pursued his passions, ultimately earning a degree in the Civil Engineering field. He worked at the South Carolina Department of Transportation as a Road and Bridge Inspector where he retired after 39 years.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Charlie proudly served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. This period of service was a testament to his character and sense of duty, symbolizing his willingness to put the needs of others before his own. His military experience shaped not only his personal values but also his approach to his career, instilling in him a profound respect for teamwork and helping others.
Charlie had a love for the outdoors and often went on hikes in the Blue Ridge Parkway area. He also loved canoeing in the area lakes and rivers. Most of all he loved spending time with his wife and family camping and playing with his grandchildren. He was a member at First Baptist Church where he served as an usher and a member of the McCall-Moorehead growth group. He was a member of the local American Legion and a Boy Scout Leader.
Charlie's enduring spirit will be remembered fondly by those who had the privilege of knowing him. His warmth and kindness made a significant impact on both his professional and personal circles. As family, friends, and colleagues reflect on his life, they will undoubtedly cherish the memories.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Alice Wyatt Atkins, his children Kimberly Fay Anderson (Husband Robert), Brad Atkins and Bruce Atkins (Wife Kristy), as well as his grandchildren Brayden and Wesley Anderson, Lennon Atkins, and Wyatt Atkins. He also leaves behind his sisters Roxanna Atkins and Barbara Tinkle.
Charlie was predeceased by his parents, Charles R Atkins Sr. and Lucy Mae Cheatham Atkins.
The family is hosting a memorial service at Easley First Baptist Church on November 9th at 11:00 AM; receiving of friends will follow the service.
The family requests that no flowers be sent and donations be made in memory of Mr. Atkins to the Legacy Endowment Fund of Easley First Baptist Church.
