Charles Preston Butler

Charles Preston Butler, Sr., 98, beloved husband of Alvina Rashe Butler, passed away May 5, 2011, at Richard Campbell Veterans Nursing Home in Anderson, South Carolina. He was born February 25, 1913 in Wilkes County, Georgia to the late George Edward and Nannie Mae Truitt Butler.
He moved to the Oklahoma Panhandle at age 13 and was elected Junior Master Farmer at age 19. Mr. Butler received a BAS in Agricultural Economics from Oklahoma State University and a MS in Agricultural Economics from Montana State University.
Charles was an Army veteran. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1945 and was stationed in Versailles, Paris, France. He moved to Clemson, South Carolina in 1946 following his military service, and worked for 34 years as an agricultural economics research economist with the US Department of Agriculture ("USDA") at Clemson University.
He received a Certificate of Merit from the USDA in recognition of his sustained outstanding work performance and the Soil Conservation award from Pickens, South Carolina.
He was a charter member of the Clemson Kiwanis Club, past distinguished Lt. Governor of the Carolinas District of Kiwanis International and Chairman of the Board for the East Clemson Water District. He was a life member of the Clemson Masonic Lodge and the South Carolina Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers. He developed two subdivisions �?" "Highland Estates" and "Ashley Estates" and organized the first Community Chest organization for Clemson. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Clemson, Pelham Road Baptist Church in Greenville, and later Leewood Baptist Church in Greenville.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Betty Sharon Heath of Hickory, North Carolina, a daughter Julia B. Eakes and son-in-law Phil Schimmel of Arlington, Virginia, and son Charles P. Butler, Jr. and his wife Miriam of Seneca, South Carolina, step-daughter Roseanne Schroeger and son-in-law Paul of Shawnee, Kansas, step-son Frank Rinaldo of Fort Worth, Texas, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home at Central-Clemson Commons, with Dr. Russell Brock, Senior Minister of First Baptist Church of Clemson, officiating. Visitation is from 1:30 to 2:30 pm prior to the service. A Masonic Committal Service will follow at Old Stone Church Cemetery in Clemson. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorials be made to the charity of one�??s choice.
