Charles Alexander Cruickshank, 94, of Clemson, South Carolina passed away January 20, 2023. He was born June 11, 1928 in Montclair, New Jersey to Charles and Olive Cruickshank, who had recently immigrated from Keith, Scotland.
He grew up in Willoughby, Ohio and served in the U.S. Army. After his service, he attended Rochester Institute of Technology and graduated with a degree in Graphic Arts. He worked in the printing industry at Case Hoyt, Inc. in Rochester, New York for most of his career. In 1950 he married Elizabeth Henry, his wife of 62 years. They retired and moved to Clemson in 1983.
He and his wife were active members of Fort Hill Presbyterian Church and he was a supporter of the church’s Boy Scout Troop 235. He was also active with the South Carolina Botanical Garden where he and Elizabeth established the Cruickshank Hosta Garden. He was always eager to share his Scottish roots and gave frequent talks on Scotland.
He is survived by sons Charles (Cecelia) of Loudon, Tennessee; Douglas (Kay) of Ellijay, Georgia; Paul of Athens, Georgia; and daughter Donna (Jim) McCubbin of Clemson. He is also survived by grandchildren Andrew Cruickshank (Ann Schultenhouer), Heather (Tim) Niccum, Stewart Cruickshank, Duncan (Kaitlin) Cruickshank, and Corey McCubbin. He is also survived by great-grandchildren Ali, Tori, Kailey, Alexa, and Russell. He was predeceased by his parents and wife, Elizabeth.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 25 at Fort Hill Presbyterian Church in Clemson. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be made to Fort Hill Presbyterian Church.
