Charles Edward Kirkwood, Jr., 96, widower of Emma Lou Wigington Kirkwood, died Saturday, October 24, 2009 at the Anderson Area Medical Center.

Born in Richmond, VA, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Norma Earl Gates Kirkwood. He joined the faculty of Clemson College in 1937 teaching Math, Physics, Electrical Engineering and later Computer Science. He was a US Army Veteran of WWII, retired from the US Army Reserve, a member of Clemson United Methodist Church and an avid amateur radio and railroading enthusiast.

Surviving are a son, Charles E. Kirkwood and wife, Rita of Alexandria, AL; a daughter, Cynthia Jane Kirkwood Marlow and husband, Steve of Travelers Rest; grandson, John Andrew Kirkwood and wife, Debbie; granddaughter, Katherine Suzanne Kirkwood Ray and husband, Heath; great-grandchildren, Emma Katherine Ray, Zachary Coleman Ray and Luke Edward Ray.

A memorial service will be held at 2 PM, Wednesday in the chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home in Central and will be preceded by a private committal.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Clemson United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 590, Clemson, SC 29633 or to the charity of one's choice.
