- Sunset
(July 20, 1929 ?" January 24, 2012)
Charles Ames Marsh (Charlie), 82, of Sunset, passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2012 after a brief illness.
Born in Waterville, Maine, a son of the late Terrill Belknap and Mona Lisa Ames Marsh, Mr. Marsh graduated from Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, WV, and was a member of Pickens Presbyterian Church. Growing up primarily in North Carolina and living half his life in South Carolina, he proudly claimed the Upstate as his true home. By trade, a salesman in the shipping industry, he retired as Director of Trade Development for the South Carolina State Ports Authority in 1985. During his term, he was instrumental in developing and expanding the international trade moving through the Port of Charleston.
Charlie was a consummate family man who trained his family well in the art of having fun, enjoying life and each other. One of his favorite family sayings was, "You can go anywhere as long as you remember your bathing suit and candy." A lover of all water sports, Charlie acted as a youth instructor in whitewater canoeing, built his own ice boat and ice skate sail while living in the Midwest and was an excellent trick water skier and windsurfer. He had an adventurous nature, enjoying camping and the outdoors. He loved dogs ?" and dogs loved him.
Beginning with his work for C.A.R.E. in Korea as a young man, Mr. Marsh traveled extensively for work and for fun. He visited every continent except for Antarctica and was at home in the world. He was a talented, self-taught watercolor artist and wood carver, an avid amateur photographer and an antique car aficionado.
Surviving are his wife, Carol, of the home; a son, Bill Marsh (Trudy) of Buford, GA; three daughters, Lisa Buurman (Robert) of Simpsonville, Terrill Byrd (James) of Gainesville, FL, and Amy Burnes (David) of Newport, RI; a half-brother, John (J.B.) Bagby from NC; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Marsh was predeceased by a brother, Owen Marsh, a half-brother, Ronald Marsh and by a step-sister, Ann Packard.
Though he was always "on the go", Mr. Marsh placed high importance in maintaining close contact with his family and his many friends. Charlie was much loved and will be greatly missed. His wry smile, quips and rich laugh will live on in the hearts of all who knew him or caught sight of the twinkle in his eyes.
Memorial services will be at Pickens Presbyterian Church, Monday, February 20, 2012, at 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Building Fund of Pickens Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 834, Pickens, SC 29671.
