Charles Daniel (Dan) Schmittou, 76, husband of Dixie Ann Doughten Schmittou, died Friday, December 24, 2010 at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville, SC. A native of Clarksville, TN, he was the son of the late Griff and Margaret Hunt Von Schmittou. He was a 1st Class Petty Officer in the U. S. Navy and served during the Korean War. He is a member of the Seneca Church of Christ and he retired as Professor Emeritus from Clemson University. In the past 2 years he has enjoyed home schooling his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife he is survived by sons, David Von Schmittou (Tawnya) of Central, SC and James Von Schmittou (Hilda) of Newton, NC; brothers, Pete, Donnie, Ronnie and Tommy Schmittou, all of Clarksville, TN and sisters, Barbara Briggs and Jane Schroeder both of Clarksville, TN; grandchildren Dixie, Scarlett, Griff and Peter Von Schmittou of Central, SC and Denisa and James Daniel Von Schmittou of Newton, NC.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 1pm in the chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home in Central, SC with burial to follow in M. J. "Dolly" Cooper Veteran's Cemetery in Anderson, SC. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5-8pm. Flowers accepted or memorials may be made to Southeastern Children's Home, 115 Children's Way, PO Box 339, Duncan, SC 29334.
