Colonel Chester R. Smith, US Army Ret, and Clemson University Professor, 98, widower of Doshie "Doe" Mae Evans Smith, passed away Monday, June 25, 2018 at his home.
He was born in Boaz, Alabama, the son of the late John R. and Alma Cook Smith. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama and earned his PhD in Economics from the University of Virginia. Colonel Smith entered the Army in 1941 and served during WWII in the Pacific theater and was awarded the Purple Star. He retired as a full colonel in 1970. Following his military career, he came to Clemson University and retired as a Professor of Management in 1982. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Clemson and was a member of the Retired Officers Club.
Surviving are his son, Chet R. Smith, Jr. (Bonnie Jean) of Fairfax, VA; daughters, Anne Smith of Eugene, Oregon and Deborah Lynn Smith (Ronald) of Southern Pines, NC; grandchildren, Todd Smith (Jennifer) and Michael Smith (Regina); great grandchildren, Parker, Madison, Emily Smith and Reagan Smith.
Graveside services with full military honors will be at 10:30 am on Saturday, June 30, 2018, at Old Stone Church Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Rusty Brock.
The family will receive friends and ask that you celebrate Col. Smith's life at 11:30 am, Saturday, June 30 at 1010 Keystone Lane, Clemson.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
