Dr. Cyril "Cy" Shuler, Clemson
Dr. Cyril Ovierre "Cy" Shuler, a former resident of the Clemson Downs, died on October 30, 2006. He was the son of the late John Ernest Shuler and Elizabeth Rhoad Shuler of Aiken, South Carolina. Born on September 18, 1912 in Aiken, he was an eighth generation South Carolinian. His wife of 65 years, Elizabeth Caroline Smith Shuler, and a brother, Ernest Rhoad Shuler of Aiken, predeceased him.
Survivors include a son, Jon Emmett Shuler, daughter-in-law Virginia Harris Shuler, and grandsons Jon Emmett Shuler, Jr. and Kline Martin Shuler all of Spartanburg, South Carolina; a daughter, Bette Anne Shuler, son-in-law Karl Schmid and granddaughter Jennifer Rhoad Shuler, all of Ulm, Germany; and a brother, Dr. James Meade Shuler of Dadeville, Alabama.
Dr. Shuler served his country for thirty years as an officer in the US Air Force. During World War II he served in the European Theater and then as part of Army of Occupation of Japan. He also participated in military operations in Korea. He was twice awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal as well as the Bronze Star.
A 1934 graduate of Clemson University, he received his Masters degree from the University of Pittsburg and his Ph. D. from the American University. In 1964 he returned to Clemson, where he taught at the University for seventeen years. After retiring from Clemson he continued to serve his beloved university as an alumni volunteer. He received the Alumni Association Volunteer of the Year Award in 1990 and the Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award in 1993.
Cy Shuler was a member of the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church of Clemson, a member of the Clemson Masonic Lodge and a Shriner.
Services will be held at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Clemson at 1:00 pm on Thursday, November 16. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the C. O. Shuler Family Endowment at the Clemson University Foundation, P. O. Box 1889, Clemson, SC 29633.
