Retired Lt. Col Danny Lewis Hammond, Sr. of Lexington, SC passed away peacefully in William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center of Columbia on Wednesday, September 25, 2013.
Born in Anderson, SC, Danny was a son of Mary Frances Newton Hammond and the late Alvin Clarence Hammond. Danny was a 1972 graduate of D.W. Daniel High School, a graduate of Limestone College and earned his Masters Degree with honors at Clemson University. He began his military career with the 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg, NC and retired from the US Army and the SC Army National Guard with the rank of Lt. Col, with Signal and Air Defense Artillery as his primary specialties. He served a tour in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom and held the position as the Education Services Officer with the SC Army National Guard prior to deployment. He was awarded numerous awards and medals during his years of service.
Upon retirement, Danny was devoted to his church and other Christian groups. He was a strong supporter and member of The Harvest, Lexington Church of Christ, The Harvest Men's Fight Club, Danny's Life Group, the Gideons, and the Irmo Band of Brothers. To his friends he was such a joy and inspiration to all who came in contact with him. He won the trust and hearts oof many who even now are being changed by his witness and love for God. To his family, he left behind a legacy built on integrity, loyalty, and love of which never wavered.
In addition to his father he was preceded in death by his step-son, Kilby Morris Siegler.
In addition to his mother he is survived by his wife, Evelyn Adams Hammond; daughter and son-in-law, Stephenie Ann and Adrian Patterson; son, Danny Lewis Hammond, Jr.; step-sons, Kevin Christopher Smith, John Heyward Chandler, Jr., and Zekiel Donald Seigler; brother and sister-in-law, Eddie Alvin and Becky Hammond; sister and brother-in-law, Connie Eileen and Tom Curtis; and grandchildren, Caitlyn Bryanna Patterson and Braeden Thomas Patterson.
Funeral services will be 1:30 PM, Saturday, September 28, 2013 in the chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, Central, SC. Burial with full military rites will follow in Lawrence Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Central, SC.
The family will receive friends from 12 noon till 1:20 PM, Saturday prior to the service at the funeral home.
A Celebration of Life Service with military rites will be 2 PM, Saturday, October 5, 2013 at The Harvest, 378 Campus, Lexington, SC.
