David Thoner McEwen

David Thoner McEwen was born in Matoaca, Virginia on December 21, 1955, to Samuel Moody and Rachel Thoner McEwen. 

David was a graduate of Matoaca High School and the Virginia Military Institute. 

David enjoyed spending time with family, being outdoors, especially anywhere with a river, and watching and playing any and all competitive sports and games. 

David is survived by his spouse; Jean Marie Tregay McEwen; his children, Virginia Spring McEwen and Joseph Bush, of Georgia, Samuel Adam and Erin Eileen McEwen of Georgia, Nano Marie Serwich of Georgia, Jessica and John Herron of South Carolina, Kelly Tregay Serwich of South Carolina, Jeannie and Tim Getchell of South Carolina, and Faith Pangburn and Zach Neal Miller of Oklahoma; his grandchildren, Thoner and Hilyer Bush, Addison McEwen, Van Broyles, River and Tai Herron, Rowan, Noah, and Caleb Getchell, Micah Pangburn, and Malana, Memphis and Marshall Miller; his brothers, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, Carolyn McEwen of Virginia and her daughters Joan McEwen Drain and Beth McEwen Hungate, Phillip Larry and Jane McEwen of Florida and their daughters Christy McEwen and Alison McEwen Capling, and Charles and Nancy McEwen of Michigan/Delaware and their children Weatherly McEwen and Andy McEwen.

David was predeceased by his parents, his cousin Robert “Robbie” McEwen, and his brother Samuel William McEwen.

The family will hold two private celebrations of life, one in South Carolina on Saturday, April 8^th, 2023, and another in Virginia on Saturday, June 24, 2023.  Please reach out for further details regarding the celebrations.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to The North Carolina Arboretum, The Leadership and Ethics Academic Program at the Virginia Military Institute, or the Friends of the Lower Appomattox River.
