Debra "Debbie" Kay (Moses) Frary, age 71, a longtime resident of Youngsville, Franklin County, NC, and more recently Oakview Park Assisted Living in Easley, SC, a beloved wife, daughter and sister, and beloved math teacher, passed from a progressive chronic health condition unto eternal life with her risen Savior Jesus Christ the morning of Monday, August 18, 2025.
Debra was born in Dayton, Ohio, on June 12, 1954, the first of two children. Debbie is a confirmed Lutheran, a 1972 graduate of Dixie High School in New Lebanon, OH, a 1976 B. Ed graduate of Miami University in Oxford, OH, and a 2006 M. Ed graduate from UNC in Chapel Hill, NC, earning NBCT certification. From childhood, Debbie said she knew she wanted to be a math teacher and went on to teach various levels of middle school math and coach math teams. She taught primarily middle school math from 1976 to 2013 in Wake County, NC, Wise County, VA, and Franklin County, NC. Always prepared and on task, she was known to be kind but firm and earned a Teacher of the Year and MATHCOUNTS Coach of the Year Award. Debbie felt very happy to have contributed to students who developed excellent math skills, leading to careers as a scientist or an orthopedic surgeon, or their staying in touch after high school graduation.
In addition to teaching in the classroom, she coached a variety of student activities, volunteered at the Wake Forest Center for Active Aging, and enjoyed cooking and baking from scratch, doing sudoku and jigsaw puzzles, crocheting, and being a cat mom.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Stephen W. Frary, in 2022, and by her parents, Larry and Neva Jo (Eby) Moses of New Lebanon, Ohio.
She is survived by her sister Julia Ann Moses Johnston and husband Kevin Johnston, nephew Kevin Tyler Johnston of St. Johns, FL, niece Kathryn Johnston of Asheville, NC, her brother-in-law Keith Frary and family of Niskayuna, NY, goddaughter Heather Moses of Upstate NY, close cousins Roger Moses and wife Karen of West Alexandria, OH and Craig and wife Caroline Moses of Midlothian, VA, Moses and Eby family aunts, uncles, and cousins, close friends Vicki and Paul Jordan of Easley, SC, Diana Freeman of Wise, VA, and all her middle school math students in Wise County, VA and Wake and Franklin County, NC.
She will be buried alongside her husband in Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, KY. Family and friends will host a celebration of life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Wake Forest Center for Active Aging, 235 E Holding Avenue, Wake Forest, NC 27587, wakeforestnc.gov.
