Donald “Tom” Thomas Cassels, 65, of Easley, South Carolina, loving husband of Pamela Lou Cassels, passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at his home surrounded by his family.
Born on December 15, 1959, in Greenville, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Sumpter Marion Cassels, Jr. and Norma Waldrep Cassels. A dedicated educator and entrepreneur, Tom's journey in the world of beauty began at Waldrep's Beauty Academy, where he not only earned a degree in Master Hair Care but also developed a passion for teaching. As an inspirational instructor and ultimately the owner of the academy, his commitment to nurturing aspiring hairstylists left an indelible mark on countless students.
Tom also owned Hair Fashions by Thomas on Augusta Street in Greenville, a unique establishment known for its dual services offering haircuts alongside lawn mower repairs—a true testament to Tom's inventive spirit. Furthermore, he managed Norma's Hair Fashions on S. Pendleton Street in Easley, where his talent and dedication continued to shine.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Tom was a lifelong learner, constantly seeking new knowledge, as evidenced by the multiple certificates he earned from Tri-County Technical College. His thirst for learning and growth was matched only by his love for family and friends. Known affectionately as "Street Preacher" or "Bubba," Tom was the epitome of down-to-earth warmth and kindness, consistently sharing his wisdom and joy with those lucky enough to know him. He founded Bread of Life Soup Kitchen and was recipient of the Jefferson Award in 2003 for his work in feeding the homeless.
Tom was deeply devoted to his faith and community. He was a longtime member of Abundant Life Church, where he built cherished connections and found inspiration in the teachings of Rev. Johnny Bragg. His commitment to his faith mirrored his generous spirit, as he consistently provided kindness and support to those around him.
An avid outdoorsman, Tom found solace and excitement in nature, embracing every opportunity to venture outdoors. Whether it was hunting and fishing or capturing the beauty of the great outdoors through nature photography, Tom's appreciation for the environment was profound. His annual trips to Yellowstone National Park, lasting for 15 consecutive years, became cherished traditions where he captured stunning photographs that reflected his deep connection to nature. Friends often remarked that his camping meals would rival any restaurant, showcasing not only his culinary skills but also the joy he found in sharing experiences with his buddies around the campfire.
In addition to his loving wife of 42 years, he is survived by a son, Cameron Walker (Anna); a daughter, Danielle Cassels (Brian Odell); two brothers, Rob Cassels (Sherry), and Chris Cassels (Crystal); and four grandchildren, Kenley Walker, Liam Walker, Norah Walker, and Eleanor Cassels-Odell.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Sumpter Marion Cassels, III.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025, from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM at Venue 88, located at 205 Iler St, Piedmont, SC 29673. In honoring Tom’s memory, the family requests those wishing to pay their respects to dress casually, echoing his laid-back and approachable nature.
