Clemson

Donald Eugene "Don" Fowler, 87, went home to be with his Lord & Savior on Sunday June 21, 2026, in Greenville, South Carolina.

Born on September 26, 1938, in Greenville County, he was a son of the late Harold Eugene Fowler and Mary Elizabeth Smith Fowler.

Don lived his faith by faithfully serving the Lord, his family, his church, his community, and his beloved alma mater, Clemson University. He was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He reflected the love of Jesus Christ to everyone he encountered.

Serving others brought him great joy and was the defining purpose of his life.

Married to the love of his life, Carolyn Ferguson Fowler, for 63 years, Don graduated from Clemson University in 1960 before serving three years in Germany as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army's 24th Infantry. After returning from overseas, Don and Carolyn made Clemson home for more than 60 years, where they raised their family and built a life of faith and service.

Don began his career with Milliken before serving in the Office of Academic Development at Clemson University. He later continued his career in Development at Furman University, where he faithfully served for over 20 years until his retirement.

For more than 50 years, Don was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Clemson, serving as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and prayer warrior.

Don also served the Clemson community as President of the Clemson Rotary Club and as a member of Tiger Brotherhood, where he spent many years as an ambassador for Clemson University, organizing alumni reunions and leading campus beautification projects.

Don loved boating on Lake Hartwell and all things Clemson. Clemson football was at the top of the list, and he treasured tailgating with family at home games and traveling to away games for nearly 70 years. Go Tigers!

Don was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Carolyn Ferguson Fowler. He is survived by his three beloved daughters, Donna Burgess (Chuck) of Taylors, SC, Debbie Fowler (Sidney) of Travelers Rest, SC, and Susie Hughes (Matthew) also of Travelers Rest, SC; his grandchildren, Drew Burgess (Alex), Taylor Burgess Hyatt (Jon), Hunter Hughes (Brittany), and Hayden Hughes; and his six great-grandchildren, Eleanor Hyatt; Hudson Hughes; Charlie Hyatt, Corbin Hughes, Andrew Hyatt, and Emmy Burgess.

A funeral service honoring the life and contributions of Don will be held at 2:00 p.m. on June 28, 2026, at First Baptist Church of Clemson, 397 College Ave., Clemson, SC 29631. Following the service, a visitation will take place in the Family Life Center at First Baptist Church of Clemson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Capital Fund at Clemson First Baptist.
