Donn Archer Johnson of Easley, South Carolina passed away at McCall Hospice House on January, 27, 2016. His death at 89 years of age was due to Merkel Cell Carcinoma, first diagnosed earlier this year.
Donn grew up in the Midwest, graduating from high school in Ottawa, Illinois. He attended the University of Cincinnati, where he was a member of the Acacia Fraternity and lettered on the UC track team, graduating with a BS in Electrical Engineering in 1950. He was a registered Professional Engineer. He worked the majority of his career with the NCR Corporation as an Engineer and then as a Product Manager, both in Dayton, Ohio and Liberty, South Carolina. Retiring from NCR after 33 years, he then worked part time at the Easley Lowes Home Improvement Store for 13 years. He was a member of the Easley Presbyterian Church, active in SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives), and served on the Easley Hospital Foundation. He was a member of the Pickens County Library Board of Trustees during the time of planning and building the Hampton Memorial Library Branch in Easley. He enjoyed woodworking and home improvement projects, repairing and maintaining cars, and traveling.
Donn is survived by his college sweetheart and wife, Caroline Ruth Liggett Johnson, with whom he celebrated 65 years of wedded bliss on July 1st of this year. Also surviving are three children, D. Louise (Dr. John) Buben, Dr. Gordon (Jana) Johnson, and Rev. Karen Johnson. Grandchildren are Daniel (Cathy) Buben, Philip (Jessica) Buben, Julia (David) Sheets, Stephanie Driver, Maggie Johnson, and Gracie Johnson. Great Grandchildren are Lydia Buben, Bennett Buben, Isaac Sheets and Judah Sheets as well as Donn’s brother, Rev. John Barney Johnson.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Howard and Clara (Archer) Johnson of Galesburg Illinois, and a much beloved son, Howard Albert Johnson (2010).
Friends may call during visitation in the Church Parlor at Easley Presbyterian Church on Sunday, January 31, 2016 from 2:00 PM until 2:45 PM.
The funeral service will be held in the Sanctuary of Easley Presbyterian Church at 3:00 PM on Sunday, officiated by Dr. Bill Seel and Rev. Christie Sweeny Gravely, with internment following at Robinson Memorial Gardens.
