Donnie H. Hughes
Greer, SC
On Friday, August 22, Donnie Hamlin Hughes of Greer, SC, wife of Rev. Wallace Hughes, went to meet her redeemer and savior, Jesus Christ. She had fought a heroic battle with cancer for almost 4 years. She had maintained an active and enjoyable life up until about the middle of June. Her Oncologist, Dr. Larry Puls, and her Nutritionist, Dr. Charles Campbell, gave their best to see that she enjoyed a good quality of life. The family wishes to thank them for their ministry to her and also to thank her oncology nurse, Mary Ellen, and her Hospice Nurses, Andrea, Jan, and Catherine, and her Hospice Case Worker, Tracy, for a very compassionate and caring ministry.
Donnie was the daughter of the late Harlow J. Hamlin and Mary Alice Tinsley Hamlin of Liberty, SC. She and her husband were members of the class of 1955 of Liberty High School. After high school, she worked as Office Manager of Atlantic and Gulf States Insurance Company of Easley for 4 years. In 1957, she married her high school sweetheart while he was a student at Furman University. On June 30, they celebrated 51 years of wonderful marriage. In 1959, they moved to Fort Worth, Texas and both of them enrolled as students at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. After one year, Donnie gave up the class room to become Director of the Oder Department of the Library of the seminary. She continued in that role until they returned to South Carolina to begin serving churches throughout the state. She spent the majority of her married years as a homemaker, but did work as Secretary and Art Assistant at Seven Oaks Elementary School in Columbia, and as an Administrative Assistant in Development at Connie Maxwell Children's Home in Greenwood.
During the 20 years that Wallace served as a Pastor and the 18 1/2 years that he served as an Associational Director of Missions, she was a faithful servant of the Lord, serving as a Sunday School Teacher, Choir Member, WMU member and Associational WMU Director, and English as a Second Language Teacher. But her main ministry was being a wife, mother, a grandmother, and a friend. That was the ministry that was so important to her and she was wonderful in the role.
She enjoyed her flower garden, bird watching, reading, and traveling. Her two grandchildren were her favorite two subjects to talk about. She loved people, had a huge host of friends, and had a special place in her heart for missions and evangelism. She was a member of Abner Creek Baptist Church, Greer.
Surviving are her husband, Wallace Hughes; their two daughters, Cynthia H. Masters and Sheri H. Wright; their two sons-in-law, Dr. Lance Masters and Kevin Wright; their two grandchildren, Taylor Wright and Hailey Wright; two brothers, Talmedge Hamlin and Wayne Hamlin; seven sisters, Lois Hayes, Dorothy McCall, Nell Gibson, Mary Hester, Janet Wilson, Shirley Stephens, and Antha James. She was predeceased by a brother, Fred Hamlin, and a sister, Grace Hamlin.
