Dorothy M. Cushing
Clemson, SC
Dorothy M. Cushing, 94, widow of Albert M. Cushing, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2014, at Clemson Downs.
Born Dorothy Marie Frederica Morgan Mercer in Bay Roberts, Newfoundland on May 23, 1919, she was the daughter of Frederick and Annie Florence Mercer. Dorothy grew up in Boston, Massachusetts, where as a schoolgirl she would meet her future husband Albert. Married in December 1940, they moved to Connecticut where Al worked for Pratt and Whitney Aircraft and Dot raised three sons. The family moved several times in the late fifties to facilitate Al's new career in computers, living for 7 years in Allendale, New Jersey, and later in Georgetown, Massachusetts. As the children grew older, Dot enjoyed working in Gimbels in New Jersey, and later for many years at Almy's Department Store in Massachusetts, until their retirement. They loved to travel, going on a number of exotic cruises. Dot liked to knit and crochet, and later enjoyed playing bingo with her friends.
Lifelong members of the Methodist Church, both Al and Dot were active in congregations wherever they lived. Dot sang in the choir and often was a soloist at Sunday services. She remembered fondly her friends and pastors at Methodist Churches in South Windsor, Connecticut, Allendale, NJ, Haverhill, Massachusetts, Concord, New Hampshire and Deland, Florida.
After Al passed away in September 1998 in Deland, Florida, Dot moved to Lake Wylie, South Carolina to be closer to her children, and in 2009 moved to Clemson.
She is survived by three sons: Paul and his wife Barbara of Denver, NC; Ken and his wife Laurie of Salem, SC; and Roger and his wife Judy of Aiken, SC; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Interment beside her lifelong love Albert will be private, at Gaston Memorial Cemetery, Gastonia, NC.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you support the charity of your choice in Dorothy's name.
