Dorothy Baldwin Edwards

October 20, 1925 — July 16, 2018

Dorothy Elizabeth Baldwin Edwards, 92, entered into eternal life on Monday, July 16, 2018.

She was born in Fletcher, North Carolina on October 20, 1925, the daughter of John Roy Baldwin, Sr. and Muriel Joy Carter Baldwin. She grew up on a large family farm - from which her entrepreneurial father trucked his crops seasonally to the great cities of the American heartland.  The family was impacted significantly by the Great Depression and following her graduation from Fletcher High School in 1943, Dorothy attended Mars Hill College where she received an Associate in Arts (1945). She then entered Berea College in Berea, Kentucky, to pursue an undergraduate degree in Home Economics (1947).  At Berea, where students were required to work on campus as part of their education, she mastered the recipes of Chef Richard Hougen of the College's Boone Hall Tavern, and worked in support of the office of Berea College President Francis S. Hutchins. At Berea, she met her future husband, Robert Lee Edwards of Barnardsville, NC, who had returned from military service in the Second World War.

Upon graduation, she returned to western North Carolina, where she worked in education and became an accomplished plein-air landscape artist painting in oil. During these years, she remained devoted to her courtship with Robert.  She married Robert Lee Edwards on June 3, 1951 and accompanied him to Raleigh, NC, where he completed studies in Animal Science earning a PhD in 1958.  They relocated to Clemson, SC, where he had accepted a position on the faculty at Clemson. In the fall, she began teaching at Pendleton High School, where she remained until the arrival of her son in 1966. She took a lengthy hiatus from teaching and completed a Master of Education degree at Clemson University (1978). She resumed teaching and completed her career at Liberty Elementary School.

In retirement, she and her husband traveled often - seeing the continental US, Canada, and Western Europe. In her later years she enjoyed the company of good books, friends and family – especially her grandson, Andrew and dog, Meggett.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and her brother John Roy Baldwin, Jr.; brother-in-law James Roy Edwards; and nephew Roy Timothy Baldwin. She is survived by her beloved husband of 67 years, Robert Lee Edwards; a son, John Robert Edwards (Virginia Stroud) of Greenville, SC; and a grandson, Andrew John Edwards. Other survivors include a sister, Francis Baldwin Hoots; a sister-in-law, June Settle Edwards, and families of three nieces and two nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, July 21,2018 at Clemson United Methodist Church, with Reverend Fran Elrod, officiating.

The family will receive friends at their home immediately following the service.
