Dorothy Earle Abrams Reed, 84 of Clemson, widow of Clarence V. Reed, died Monday, October 29, 2007 at her home. Mrs. Reed was born August 2, 1923 in Whitmire, S.C. to the late Raymond T. and Carlie Cave Abrams. She graduated from Whitmire High School in 1940 and attended Winthrop College.
She is survived by her sister, Carolyn A. Morgan of Clemson, widow of Carlisle Morgan; two sons, Darryl M. Reed and his wife Delores of Anderson, SC, Tedford F. Reed and his wife, Mary Martha of Durham, N.C.; one granddaughter, Meredith L. Reed of Greenville, S.C.; two grandsons, Shannon T. Reed and his wife Michelle of Durham, N.C. and Stephen C. Reed and his wife, Julie of Greenville, N.C. A special thanks to all of her exceptional friends and caregivers, for their consistent, loving, and unconditional thoughtfulness and the tough love they all shared.
Mrs. Reed was the primary caregiver for her parents for several years. The First Baptist Church of Whitmire was her home church where she served as secretary and music director. She retired in 1985 after 19 years of service at Whitten Center, a part of the S.C. Department of Mental Retardation, as administrative assistant in the Orthopedic Department. In 1985 she moved to Clemson to be with her sister Carolyn where they were to become known as "The Sisters". She became a vital member of the First Baptist Church of Clemson and quickly became active in numerous ministries of the church including the music ministry, the WMU, Keenagers, Sunday School and a volunteer in the church office. She also served as secretary for the Pendleton Presbyterian Church in Pendleton, SC.
Funeral service will be held at 11am Thursday at First Baptist Church of Clemson. The body is at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home and will be placed in the church at 9:30am where the family will receive friends from 9:30am 10:30am. prior to the service. Burial will be Thursday at 3:30pm at the Whitmire Cemetery on Cemetery Drive in Whitmire, S.C. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Building Fund of the First Baptist Church of Clemson, 397 College Ave., Clemson, SC 29631. The family is at the residence, 114 Shaftsbury Road in Clemson.
