Dr. Richard Michael “Mike” Straker, 78, beloved husband of Rita Davis Straker passed away on Friday, July 25, 2025. Born in Lima, OH to the late Harold Straker and the late Della Staples Straker, he was of Baptist faith and an avid Clemson Tiger fan.

Dr. Straker received his Doctorate of Optometry, which served as a foundation for his successful career and marked him as an exceptional figure in his field. He was the owner and operator of Optical Express until his retirement, an endeavor that showcased his commitment to serving the needs of many.

In addition to his professional achievements, Dr. Straker proudly served for 20 years in the United States Army, where he retired with the rank of Army Major. His military service underscored his character and determination, qualities that enriched all aspects of his life.

Outside of his professional life, Mike was an avid bowler, often seen competing in local leagues, relishing the camaraderie that the sport fostered. His commitment to community development was evident in his active involvement with the Lyons Club, the American Legion as well as his service with the Girl and Boy Scouts. He also took great joy in coaching soccer, sharing his love for the game with aspiring young athletes.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Lola S. Behm.

In addition to his wife of 60 years, Mike is survived by daughters, Jennifer S. Straker and Kathryn “Katie” Straker; son, Kevin Michael Straker; grandson, Jack Kolbe and brother-in-law, John Behm.

Dr. Straker was remembered as an outstanding father, a title he cherished deeply. His legacy extends beyond his professional achievements and community involvement; he will be remembered for the warmth, love, and guidance he provided to his children and those fortunate enough to know him.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, August 1, 2025, at 10:00 AM in Robinson Memorial Gardens, Veterans’ Section with military honors.

Dr. Mike Straker will be remembered not only for his accomplishments but also for the indelible impact he made on his family and community. His contributions are cherished by those who had the privilege to know him.
