EARLE H. AMBROSE, COLONEL - Seneca, S.C.

Earle H. Ambrose, Colonel, U.S. Air Force, Retired, passed away on Thursday, October 1, 2009. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Betty Bradley Ambrose of Seneca, S.C.; his three children, Betty Jane Childress and husband, Wayne of Badin Lake, N.C. Robert Earle Ambrose and wife Chris of Castle Valley, Utah and Katherine Ann Wisz and husband Ken of Hampstead, N.C.; five grandchildren, Kelley Childress Wagoner of Beaufort, N.C., Sarah Ambrose Edstrom of Seattle, WA, Katie Ambrose of Fairbanks, Alaska, Matthew Wisz of Lexington, N.C. and Megan Wisz of Raleigh, N.C. and two great-grandchildren, Chase Wagoner and Landen Wisz.

He was the son of the late Ike H. and Kate Hutchings Ambrose of Greenville, S.C. and was preceded in death by five brothers, Charles, George and Tom of Greenville, S.C., Ike Jr. of Six Mile, S.C. and Paul of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and one sister, Hazel Dale of Greenville, S.C.

Colonel Ambrose entered the Air Force as an aviation cadet after graduating from Greenville High School in 1942. He retired as Base Commander at Eielson Air Force Base at Fairbanks, Alaska in 1973. He was a command pilot with over 20,000 flying hours in the Strategic Air Command. He was a graduate of the National War College at Fort Lesley J. McNair in Washington, D.C. He served during three of his country's wars, World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam, and was a recipient of the Legion of Merit with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal with five Oak leave Clusters and numerous other awards.

Upon his retirement from the Air Force, he was employed by the Clemson University Athletic Department as their pilot and also served as Assistant Athletic Director until his retirement in 1990.

Memorial services will be held at Lawrence Chapel United Methodist Church on Sunday at 3pm. Visitation will follow the service in the church Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to Lawrence Chapel U. M. C., 2101 Six Mile Highway, Central, SC 29630, where Earle was an active and devoted member.
