Edith Keyser Castro, “Edie”, passed away on September 12, 2024, surrounded by her husband of
66 years and her children, grandchildren, family, and an abundance of love. Edie was born on
December 21, 1935, in Grafton, West Virginia to Susie Mary (Nestor) Keyser and
Gordon Roscoe Keyser. Of note, Grafton, West Virginia was an important terminal for the
Baltimore and Ohio railroad and the home of the church where Anna Jarvis conceived Mother’s
Day.
Escaping the limited opportunities of a small town, Edie moved to Middletown, New York
where she worked as a pharmacist assistant and attended Orange County Community College. It
was there that she met Walt - the love of her life. In 1956, Walt left for undergraduate study at
Indiana Institute of Technology (IIT) and Edie returned to Grafton to help her ailing parents.
Two years later they married and spent Walt’s senior year at IIT. After supporting Walt’s
Master’s and PhD studies, they returned with their three boys to Clemson where they lived for 60
wonderful years.
Surviving are her husband Walt and sons: Jon (Martha), Chris, and Andy (Sharon);
grandchildren: Raley (Bryan), Rebecca, Adam, Ava, and Ansley. Also, a sister Carol Lee
(George) Manos and brother Gordon Robert Keyser and many loving nieces, nephews, great-
nieces and great-nephews.
Edie (known to her grandchildren as “Ger”) loved her life as a homemaker, wife, Mother and
Grandmother. She was adored by all who knew her – especially her boys and grands. Edie was
always known for the delicious meals that she prepared, and for her mastery of all things dessert.
She was a “mama bear” in all aspects of that definition. She joined Clemson United Methodist
Church (CUMC) in 1959 (Church secretary 1961 – 1962 ) and was an active member of the
Bereavement Committee and Church circles. She was a member of the Clemson Women’s Club
and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Edie loved God and had a very strong faith. She
passed her love for the Lord to family, friends, and to all she met. We will all miss her smile, her
grace, her sweet spirit, and her loving, kind and gentle touch.
Donations in Edie’s honor may be made to the Epworth Children’s Home, the Christian
Appalachian Project, Special Olympics or the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.
A memorial service will be held at the CUMC on September 22, 2024, at 2:00 pm. Visitation
with the Family will be held following the service. A private interment in Woodland Cemetery
will be held at a later date.
