Mrs. Edna "Tiger" Mitchell, 87, widow of Ned R. Mitchell, died Friday, August 1, 2008 at Foothills Presbyterian Community in Easley, SC and was a member of Fort Hill Presbyterian Church in Clemson, SC.

She was born May 10, 1921 to the late Ada and William "Cap" Cantrell in Six Mile, SC.

She graduated from Winthrop College in 1942 and Clemson University in 1974 with a Masters Degree in Education.

A dedicated classroom teacher, Mrs. Mitchell began her career in Jacksonville FL,then returning to SC to teach in Charleston, Oconee and Pickens Counties. She taught Seventh grade Life Science at R.C. Edwards Junior High School from it's opening until she retired in 1981.

The name "Tiger" was bestowed upon Mrs. Mitchell by Ben Bagwell, Editor of the Pickens Sentinel newspaper for her lifelong fight for better education. In addition to being a life member of both the South Carolina and the National Education Association, she was an 8 year member of the Board of Directors of the SCEA and an elected delegate to the Representative Assembly of the NEA for over 15 years. She was an active member of the Charleston, Oconee and Pickens County Teacher's Associations and served as president of the Pickens association for 2 years. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and Phi Delta Kappa where she served as president for the Clemson University chapter. She was elected trustee to the board of directors of the school district of Pickens County for the Clemson area and served as chairman for 2 years. As a founding member of the Pickens County Educators Federal Credit Union, she served as president from 1977-1992. She was the recipient of the Dora Maxwell award for excellence 1987-1991 and was also an active Parliamentarian.

Surviving are her children, Ned R. Mitchell, Jr. and wife, Paula, of Denver, NC and William H. Mitchell and wife, Ginny, of Terre Haute, IN; grandchildren, Andrew Mitchell and Amanda Mitchell; one brother, Ralph Cantrell of Easley; and one sister, Jemima Echerd of Six Mile, SC.

Funeral services will be 11 AM, Tuesday in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown with burial to follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 AM, Tuesday prior to the service at the funeral home.
